TEMUKA.

A meeting of the Teniukaßoad district ratepayers was held yesterday afternoon to consider tho following alternative proposals:—(l) Joining in with tho Goraldine and Mt. reel Road Boards with <i view to forming a big county. (2) To let Geraldino and Mt. Peel form a county of their own and Temnka a county of its own. About forty ratepayers were present. Mr Armitage. chairman 6i tho Road Board, presided. Tho present system of local government, whereby tbo country from tho Hills to the- sea is governed by the Geraldino County Council, the Temuka Road Board, the Geraldino Road Board, tho Mt. Peel Road Board, and tw River Boards, was adversely criticised. Tho difficulty in the way of Tomuka joining in with Geraldine and Mt. Peel was alleged to bo Gcraldine's fears that the preponderating voting power of Temuka would in tinie cause tho 'headquarters, if kept in Geraldine at tho outset, to be later removed to Temuka, and also that. Temuka might exercise too big a sway over the general fund collected for the maintenance of the main roads and bridges, etc. The meeting finally decided, on tho motion of Mr John Talbot, seconded by Mr Ensor, to offer no obstacle to the passago through Parliament of the Bill to constitute the. Geraldine and Mt. Peel Road Boards into a county. Tho effect of this is that Temuka prefers to remain as it is or form itself into a county if. thought desirable. Tho late Mr G. McSheeahy Gentleraun. of Temuka. who died a few days .igo. has bequeathed the sum of £1000 to tho re-erection of Temuka Catholic School, £100 to Sisters of St. Joseph's Convent (Temuka), £50 to Sisters of St. Joseph's Convent (Kerrytown), £300 to Mount Magdala Asylum, £200 to Girls' Orphanage (Nelson-), £300 to St. Nazareth'e Home (Christchurch), £300 to the Catholic Cathedral (Christchurch), £100 to tho. Roman Catholic Church (Tima-ni). £300 to the Roman Catholic Church (Tomuka), £700 to the Provincial Society of Mary of New Zealand, tho latter snm to bo invested and tho income arising therefrom to be applied for- the purpose of educating or assisting in the education of young men for tho Roman Catholic priesthood.
