THE LYTTELTON TUNNEL.
TO THE EDITOR OF '"THE PRESS." Sir, —I wish to support your correspondent, "W.G.8.," in his remarks on this subject. I note what you say in your article about cost of electrification.' I submit, however, that the public, are not called on to consider that aspect of tho question. Whac they have to do is to centre their minds on the fact that ever since the tunnel has been opened it has to be used so as to make the Lyttelton and Christchurch railway one of tho most profitable in the world. We can therefore justly claim that no financial considerations shall stand in the way of the electrification of the Lyttelton and Christchurch railway. It is expected that electricity from the Lake Coleridge scheme will be available in August, so that tbe preparation for tbe electrification should be set about at once. There is no need for duplication at present. There need do no fear of collision in tho tunnel, for the simple reason that if trains were to leave tho termini at tho same time and were to travel at tho same speed, which could he assured, as power will be almost illimitable, then they would pass each other midway, and could not possibly bo in the tunnel at the same time. After electrification t .ko* t. th< ,m "*'"l be <-f time to consider whether duplication i» necessary-—Yours, etc.. _~___,,. JOSHUA LITTLE.
