SWIMMING.
A MILE CHALLENGE RACE, j , YOUNG SWIMMERS' INTERESTING p; \; _. "_; match.. ;; it , ;\ - An -. interesting contest\ was decided last evening in . the Richmond swimming baths, .when two young swimmers belonging to the East Christchurch Club, C. Atkinson md U. Hill, tried conclusions in a mile raoe, which ■ had been arranged as the result of * challenge by the former. The bath being the usual 25 yards in length, the mile was cub up into seventy laps and a distance of 10 yards.' Both BWiminers started with an easy swinging stroke, and kept on even terms Xor the' first twelve or fifteen lengths. Then Hill, going strongly, got n slight lead, which ho had increased to three or four yards' at tho quarteMnile. ' Ho then made the pace a little faster, arid after completing 650 yards Atkinson retired. Going alone for tho reinainder of the distance, Hill gave a fine I display of swimming, his pace being quite fast enough for one or two fresh- swimmers .who. went a few lengths with him. At rx> time did he appear to tire,' and in the last few laps he visibly increased his Bpoed, and he finished very strongly, and apparently was quite fresh. Hill was loudly applauded ty the spectators, who had greatly admired his fine performance. Ho swam the distance; in 26min 22 2-sth sec, nearly 38scc better than tho standard time of 27 minutes.
