. LAUNCH OP TEE COLUMBUS. On December 17th, in tho presence of tho German Crown Prince and Crown Princnaa, and Herr Barkhau.en, Burgomuster of Bremen, Herr Fritz Achelis, president, and Herr Ueinekcn, chairman of the Norddeutschcr Lloyd, and a numerous p-tliering, the steamship Columbus, which will bo the largest ve.se! in the company's fleet, wa*s successfully launched at the yard of V. Schichau in D-ntrig. The christening ccromony was performed by her Imperial Highness. The principal measurements of the Columbus are:—Registered tonnage 35.009, displacement 42,000 tons, lengtli 775 ft. breadth 83ft, and depth .14ft. The propelling machinery will consist of two sets of triple-exp-nsion reciprocating engines, giving a speed of 20 knots. There will be in all nine decks, and in order to secure the utmost limit of safety, the hull i? divided into an unusual number of great and small watertight compartments. Accommodation will be provided for 536 first-class, 441 second, 673 third, and 1110 steerage, making, with the crew of 764. a total of 3532 souls. The feature of the passenger accommodation will be that most of tho cabins •in the first-class will t«j for one passenger only, and in the secondclass for two parsen»ers. It is exp.cted that the Columbus will bt ready for tho autumn season of next year.
