ABERDEEN WHITE STAR LINE.
THE EURIPIDES LAUNCHED. The Euripides, a large triple-screw steo-' mcr, under construction by Harland and Wolff. Limited, for Messes Geo. Thompson and Co., Limited's passenger and'cargo service between London and Australia, was successfully launched at Belfast on Thursday, January 29th. The Euripides is a very handsome vessel of similar type to the Themistocles and Demosthenes, already running in the same service, but the new vessel is considerably larger, being 569 ft over all in length, '67ft 3in beam, with a gross tonnage of about 15,000, and a displacement of 25,000 tons. She has been constructed under Lloyd's survey for the 100 A.l. class, also in compliance with tbe requirements of tbe Admiralty Transport Departnwnt and the Board of Trade passenger surrey. The cellular doublo bottom extends the whole length of the ship, and she is subdivided into twelve water-tight compartments, so desig-ned that the vessel would remain afloat with any two of the oompartments similarly flooded. The Euripides will be a very large cargo, carrier, and her seven hatches will be served by nineteen winches. . _ The vessel will be insulated for the carriage of frozen cargo of all kinds, the refricerating machinery being of Messrs J. and E. Hall's latest type. To ensure the satisfactory carriage of fruit, fans are provided for circulating air over cooled coils, and three compartments have been specially adapted for the conveyance of chilled beef. - As usual with the Aberdeen Line, first-class-'and third-class passengers only will be carried. The ealo<Jn passengers will be quartered on the bridge and awning decks, while the boat deck will be reserved for them for promenade, . and in addition, a special sun deck will be provided over the smoking-room and verandah, thus affording exceptional deck spac*—both covered and
uncovered. Tbe public rooms will he cweptionallv large snd commodious. Tho '<>]»»«» and library are situated on the bridge dock, the sraoJting-room and and tho gymnasium on the boat deck. The dinmg saloon, on the main d«ck, extends right across the ship. A nursery is provided on the awning dock for the benefit of children, and a large laundry has also been fitted for tho us* of pamngers. A special featitre will be the cabin accommodation on tbe bridge deck, where there will b© very larff* rooms fitted with two bedsteads and slightlysmaller rooms provided with one bedstoad, and one berth each. Tbe Intter are arranged in pairs, with » door between. Special attention has bocn paid to tho ventilation of the passenger accommodation, and in both classes, die lavatory and bathroom ac» commodation is specially good. The third; class passengers' quarters aro situated in tbe poop and main tween docks, and comprise two, four, and six-berth cabins. The dining saloon is a magniticent apartment extending right across tho ship and seating about 270 people. The smoking-room and general rooT", both vrrv !-»ft;e apartments, arc placed on the awning deck. The Kuripiues will be fitted with wireless telegraphy and submarine signalling apparatus, and will have life-boot accommodation for more than her full complement of passenger* andcKK. She will make the trip from London to Melbourne in fcrty daya. The ve-sscl is scheduled to sail Homewards from Sydney on 7th September next, and again early in February, 1915.
