FIRE ALARM IN A PICTURE THEATRE.

(special to "the γ-bess.") AUCKLAND, January 29. The ringing of a firebell caused a cry of "Fire!" to be raised in a picture theatre at Newmarket last evening, with the result that there was a good deal of excitement among the audienco. The firebell. rang shortly after the interval, and three young men who were sitting in the back portion of tho theatre rushed to the exit calling out '•'Fire'" The effect on tho audienco was electrical, and for a moment trouble was imminent. The majority of the people 6tood up, and a number precipitately rushed the door. The pianisto continued to play, and this, together with the assurance of tho less excitable members of the audienco, had tho desired effect.
