KAIAPOI.
The members of the Fire Brigade got off a competition last night, but tho results will not be known till the sealed handicaps are opened. The twenty-fourth anniversary of the Kaiapoi Women's Christian Temperance Union was celebrated on Wednesday, when there wa*} a large attendance of members and friends. Miss Roberts, of Christchurch, gave an address, dealing with the history of the temperance .movement. Musical items were given by Miss "Wadey and Mrs J. Wylio. The secretary's annual report showed that good work had been done during the year in the following departments:— Educational, cradlo roll, relief work, literature, band of hope, scientific temperance instruction, anti-gambling, and refreshment booth. Tho report continued :—"Fourteen business " meetings and five public .meetings have been held during the year. Several of the members are on the Band of Hope Committee, and take their turn alternately with the churches in arranging an evening's programme. ' Prizes have been given to school children for the best essays on temperance wall sheets. The Union is amalgamating with the No-licenso League with regard to the Democratic vote campaign. Splendid work has been done in the relief department. Seventeen parcels of clothing have been sent out to relievo distress, besides giving help in other ways. Five educational meetings have been held, and two public meetings were organised by the W.C.T.U.. to consider the question of Bible-in-State Schools." Good reports were also read from the following unions, which are auxiliary unions of the Kaiapoi W.C.T.U.:—Rangiora, Oxford, Kaikoura, and Belfast.
