ASHBURTON.
The Timaru United Friendly Societies held their ninth annual picnic on the Ashburton Domain yesterday, in beautiful weather. Tho party numbered approximately between 1500 and 1600, and arrived by two special trains. Tho May on* of Ashburton (Mr Henry 3>avis) met tho party, and welcomed them to Ashburton. Tho day was spent on tho Oval, whero sports were held, whilo during the afternoon many visited the Ashburton Swimming Club's Annual Carnival, which was held in the Domain Baths. The Timaru Tenuis-Club played a match with the Ashburton Club and the "Wesley (Timaru) Tennis Club played the St. Andrew's Club._ The Kia Toa Bowling Club sent seven, rinks to play tho Ashburton Club, and the Timaru Croquet Club also, tried conclusions with the Ashburton Clubs. The Timaru Marine Brass Band accompanied the excursion and played selections during their stay.* Tho picnic party left shortly before six o clock . for Timaru, having thoroughly enjoyed their outing. The weekly meeting of tho Ashburton Good Templars' Lodge was held on Wednesday' evening, when Bro. A. Moore, C.T., presided. The following officers were elected for the ensuing quarter:—-C.T., Bro. A. Moore; V.T., iiister E. Baker; secretary, Bro. D. Hickman; treasurer, Sister S.- Boyce; Guard, Bro. "W. Andrews; Marshal, Sister Kerr; Financial Secretary .Bro. C. Jessop; Chaplain, Sister. Wills;. Pianist, Sister" Xeville; Sentinel, Bro. Lowe; reporter, Bro. F. Burgess.
