Tho Superintendent of Police, in his report to the Chief Secretary, strongly " protested against Mr Prendergast's recent order prohibiting the application of "the third degree" in the examination of suspects. Hβ contends that the order tends towards the prevention • of the detection of crime and operates against the police in favour of the lawbreaker. The Chief Commissioner of Police recommends that the matter should be left to the discretion and intelligence of the officers engaged.
