; CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA. (rates. association TmMauH.) ' AUCKLAND, January 29. The Amateur •' Rowing Chainpionslupe of New Zealand were decided at the annual, xegatta at Meioex to-day, and were attended by many thousands of. people, conveyed thither from all parts of -the province by excursion trains. 'The"-weather conditions were favourable. A notable feature of the regatta,. considered as a Dominion Championship Meeting, was the ahnoet total absence of outeide competition. In the . classic events —the "Champion Fonre, Pairs, Double Sculls, and Single Sculls—with the eingle exception of Wanganui oarsmen, the competitors were rowing men from the various clubs in the district governed by the Auckland Rowing , Association. No attempt has been made to conceal the fact that the Wellington and •Marlborough oarsmen in particular regard the Waikato River ac an unsuitable course for a championship Tegatta. Some of them have gone co far as to express the opinion that the couree does not' afford equal conditions for all competitors. The championship reeulta were:— . CHAMPION PAIRS. Wanganui "Union (Cotterill " and Sbarpc) •' 1 Waitemata (Herring and'Andxewe) , ... 2 These were the only competitors. Won'by ten lengths. It was a disappointing race for a championship.
