MR HOSKING, K.C., RAISED TO ! THE BENCH. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGUAM.) WELLINGTON, January 29. The Attorney-General (the Hon. A, L. Herdman) made the following statement in connexion with the judiciary to a reporter to-day:— "The resignation of Sir Joshua Williams will take effect from the 31st of this month. Mr Justice Sim will relinquish the office of President of the Arbitration Court, and will in future perform judicial duties only. Mr J. H. Hosking, K.C., of Dunedin, has been offered, and has accepted, the seat upon the Supreme Court Bench, which will have to be filled when the Judicature Amendment Act, passed last session, comes into force on the Ist of February next. Who will be the new President of the Arbitration Court has not yet been settled. On this point I shall probably be able to make a statement before tho end of the pre--sent week."

(SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") " DUNEDIN, January 26. Mr John Henry Hosking, K.C., bas been so Tong in practice in Dunedin that many people would argue confidently that he is a native of the city. Born, in Penzance, Cornwall, 59 years ago, he was brought out to Auckland by nis parente in the year 1856. , He was educated in Auckland, and at 16 was articled for fivo years to the late Mr Samuel Jackson, of Messrs Jackson and Russell, a firm •whose name still flourishes in Auckland. He was admitted in Auckland as a barrister and eolictor ," by the late Mr Justice Gillies in 1875. Hβ then came to Dunedin as managing clerk to Mr TSenyon, whom he joined as a partner in 1877.. The firm was dissolved in 1898, after which Mr Hbsking carried on practice alone for 10 years, when he joined Mr John Cook m partnership. He was appointed King's Counsel in June, 1907. Last year he was appointed by the Government to act wfth 3lr A. Mclntosh as a Royal Commission to enquire into the working of the Public Trust Office.
