At a special meeting of the Geraldine School Committee held on Wednesday night Ht was agreed, to recommend to the South Canterbury Education Board the appointment of Mr Andrew Bain, 8.A., of Invercargfll, as headmaster. There were twenty-six applicants for tho position. Messrs E. Cartwright and 0. Cody were selected for the vacancies of first and second assistants. _Liout. Cyril Gore, late of the Royal Naval Reserve, has been added to the list of supplementary lieutenants in the Royal Navy.' Lieut.' Gore, who served on H.M.S. New Zealand during her recent world's cruise, was formerly second officer" of the steamer Nairnshire, and more recently was in the service of the Cunard Line. He became a midshipman in the Royal Naval Reserve in October, 1888, and was,, advanced to sublieutenant in October, 1904. Hβ has completed short courses in gunnery, torpedo, strategy, and international law, and was appointed Lieut., R.N.R., on H.M.S. New Zealand in November. 1912. He is re-appointed .to her on transfer to the Royal Navy as a supplementary lieutenant with seniority of September Ist, 1913. Last year 53 names were added to the list of supplementary lieutenants in the Royal Navy. Mr Walter Ramsden, works manager of the Petone Woollen Mills, died somewhat suddenly on Tuesday afternoon. Hβ was born in Yorkshire, England, about 52 years ago, and for some time was an employee of the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, and afterwards joined the staff of the Petone mill as a loom tuner, under his father, the company's first worke manager. Upon the retirement of the late Mr Ramsden's father, Mr Woods succeeded him as mill manager, at a period when Mr Ramsden had risen to be foreman of the weaving department. Having passed through all the departments at tho mill. Mr Ramsden was appointed to succeed Mr Woods, and had held the position of works manager for the past eighteen years. He left a widow and three sons —Messrs Albert. Clif., and Stanley Ramsden—all of whom are Petone residents.
