SOUTHLAND CATTLE MARKET.
ferECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") INVERCAItGILL, January 28. There was not "a great deal of activity in the fat cattle market at the Wallacetown sale yesterday. Before the sale of this class of stock Tiad concluded, a. big drop was noticeable in prices, and the demand dwindled, away to vanishing point. Good bullock beef sold at up to 28s and 29s per 1001b, but there was nothing in the yard that ranged up to as high as 30s. It k a very long tizno since cow and heifer beef was as low as it ranged yesterday, in spite" of the fact that there*was some really good stuff in the yards. The greater part of the yarding of heifer beef sold at under 25s per 1001b, whilst
decent cow beef was selling from 20s to 21s—in no caso did it go above 225. Tho plentiful supply of grass is* no doubt accountable for tho large yardings of cattle which are being met with at tlie public saleyards at this period. For the next few sales this experience is certain to continue, and, therefore, much of an advance on yesterday's figures cannot be looked for for some time to come.
