BEEF UNCHANGED. FAT LAMBS A SHADE EASIER. ; PRIME FAT~SHEEP FIRM. • IBY OCE COMMERCIAL EDITOR.) i There were fairly large envries oi stock, the yarding of fat sheep showing an increase. Fat cattlo -were rathei • duller of sale, but prices were unchanged. Store sheep sold quito up tc last week's rates, the supply not being equal to the- demand. Fat lambs showed a drop in values, and the fat sheep sale opened well, and only medium and inferior ewes showed a decline. Store cattlo did not sell as well as of late, and there was no change in pigs. STORE SHEEP. The yarding oi store sheep was sligntiy smaller tnan tuo previous weeK, lainus again representing tno larger part or' mc yaruing, tno ualanco being made up or a fair number oi ewes ana a lew pens ot wethers. The sale opened at prices s-lightly beiow the previous wees's level, buc tins weakness soon wore oft, prices advancing to ttio level or" a week earlier, and continuing unchanged until the end, everything being sold. Rather n\oro ewes were on otter than of late, but the supply was inadequate for requirements, and all sorts sold freely. iSwes from two-tooths to full-mouth, were in very keen demand. Wethers were unchanged, the supply being inadequate. On the whole, the level of prices was quite up to the previous week, with a bettor demand for medium claes ewes. FAT LAMBS, The yarding of fat lambs totalled 3796, as compared with 4432 last week. The quality showed a falling-off, and a number of lots were only forward stores. There was good competition from exporters, though they* were endeavouring to operate on lower limits. The Australian buyer was operating for the first time, and the competition was too keen to allow mucfr of a drop, tho range of values being 6d to 6£d per lb, as against 6id per lb last week. The lower price per head was mainly due to the poorer quality of tho lambs, tho yarding in this respect showing tho lowest average for the season. Tegs made" 20s to 21s lid,. The yarding of fat sheep occupied about nine and a half races, as compared with only six races last week. The quality was well up to the average of late sales, and there was a good demand both for export and local consumption. The market opened well, without change in prices for wethers and prime ewes, but as the yarding was mainly composed of oires, there were more of these than the butchers required, and medium and inferior sorts were easier. A few lines of ewes were purchased for export, ami several lots of young ewes were taken by a grazier. The range of prices was:— Prime wethers. 21s to 23s lid. Others, los 6d to 20s 6d. Merino wethers, 15e lid. Prime ewes, 19s to 235. , Others, 14s to 18* 6d. "" The princinal sales were:—Wethers: For R. Holland (Methven). 31 at 21s fid to 23s lid; H. The yarding of fat cattle was of moderate dimensions, totalling 248 head, compared with 223 at the previous sale, and 242 on January 14th. As regards quality, little fault could be found with tho bulk of the cntryi, although, of course, there were the customary exceptions. However, good beef largely predominated. Probably as a result of tbo continual warm weather and the consequent waste, the demand in point of briskness compared unfavourably with the sale held a week earlier, and there was no quotable change in values, beef making 29s to 325, extra to 33s per 1001b.
