WELLINGTON PILOTS' BUSY SUNDAY.
The Wellington Harbour Board's staff of pilots had an exceptionally busy time on Sunday last. The staff was under instructions to be early at tho wharf, but tho first call came before the appointed hour. At 4.45 a.m. the outer signal station reported thai two big boats had arrived off the Heads, and wero each in need of a pilot. Tho vessels proved bo be the Strathdeno and tha Achbbster, both with coal from Calcutta. Pilots Dawson and Shilling were communicated with, and they brought the ships to an anchorage in tho stream. In the meantime two Home liners—Tainui and Turakina--were ready to pa.il for London. J*ost before 6 o clock Captain Johnson sent the former If 3B^. 10 , -***- and - returning later, he took tbe Turakina out also. He then boarded the busses, which was awaiting a berth in the stream, and brought that vessel up to Glasgow Wharf into tho position vacated by the Tainui. Then the Otald arrived from London, via Auckland, at ten minutes to 7, and she was boarded by Captain Shilling, who brought her to Jervois quay. In addition, the iy»et liner, Indrapun., was moved from the Railway Wharf to Glasgow Wharf, No. •*iT if nl "-novat of tonnage (gross) dealt with by the pilots was 47,973 tons, divided between soven ocean-going vessels.
