9 CANAL ANI> JAPANESE QUESTIONS. (By Cable.—Preea Association—Copyright.! (Received January 27th, 11.50 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 2<. President Wilson conferred with the Foreign Relations Committee on the question of Panama Canal tolls and the Japanese land controversy. It is stated that a critical situation has not arisen on either question, but President Wilson wished to endeavour to test the Committee's feeling on various important questions pending. It is hoped that Mr Bryan's peace treaties will soon be ratified. The Japanese question is still open for negotiation. It is reported that President Wilson expressed a desire to see a general Arbitration Treaty with Britain ratified first, and Mr Adamson's resolution, now pending in the House, carried, thus suspending the_ operation of free tolls for two years. Diplomatic correspondence is meanwhile proceeding.
