LORD DENMAN.
♦ RESIGNS GOVERNOR-GENERAL-SHIP OF AUSTRALIA. (By Cable—Prese Association.—Copyright.) (Received January 26th, 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 26. Lord Denman, in a speech at the Australian Natives' Association's Foundation Day banquet, made the unexpected announcement that he had resigned tho Governor-Generalship, and was returning to England during the present year. He did not wish, he said, to woary the meeting with his reasons for tho step beyond saying that indifferent health was one. He had considered asking for leave for a, few months to obtain a complete change, but had decided that it was not in the best interests of the Commonwealth that the Governor-General should be absent when tho political situation was full of uncertainty and there was a possibility of a political crisis occurring. It was a severe wrench to have to leave his work in Australia-. Sir George Reid, the Hon. J. Cook, and other speakers said they deeply regretted Lord Denman'e resignation, and eulogised his administration.
