THE ZABERN INCIDENT. BERLIN, December 7.
Public feeling at Zabern is satisfied with the punishment of the offending officers. The removal of tho regiment will serioueJy affect the town's economic position, unless another regiment replaces it.
JAPANESE IN CALIFORNIA. WASHINGTON, December 7. A deadlock has been reached between
Japan and the United States over the treatment of Japanese by the State of California. Japan maintains that treaty rights have been invaded, but the United States holds a contrary view.
I'IRE IN A MINE. BERLIN, December 7.
Through a firo in a mine at Rybnik, thirteen men were killed and three are missing.
SHORT SENTENCES
LONDON, December 7
Mr McKenna, speaking at the London Magistrates' Club, forecasted a measure nftxt session abolishing short sentences where possible. He «aid that short sentences should bo avoided. They did nobody any good, were mast expensive to the State, perfectly useless to the victims, and did not protect society. Hardened and determined criminal* must get long sentences. THE SfACKHOUSE EXPEDITION". LONDON, December 8. Lieutenant Fennel], in a letter to the newspapers, states that Commander Evans, Lieutenant Campbell. Dr. Atkinson, and other members of the Expedition of 1910-13, also Lady Scott,, wish to point out that however attractive the Stackhousa plans may be. they are not aware that Captain Scott, proposed any plans excepting tlnne carried out by himself or his lieutenants.
