CHRISTCHUECH TRAMWAYS.
AMENDING BILL WITHDRAWN. (special to "the press.") • * WELLINGTON, December 8. When the Christchurch Tramway Dis-trict-Act Amendment Bill came before the House this morning, Mr H. G. Ell (tho member in charge of the Bill), asked leave to withdraw it in accordance with instructions. Mr Davey said he was* sorry that the Tramway Board desired to withdraw tho Bill because of an amendment made by the Local Bills Committee. He had, therefore, been deprived of the opportunity of moving an amendment of which he had given notice. Hβ would make it his business next session to bring the matter before the House again.
Mr G. W. Russell said that he considered that the Tramway Board had acted improperly in withdrawing the Bill. It was evidently a matter of pique, as there was no reason why. because two or three proposals had oeen eliminated, that the Board should hare sacrificed the whole of the Bill, which •would undoubtedly have gone a long way towards improving the tramway services and placing the finances on a, sound footing. Mr Witty spoke to a similar effect. The Board under the Bill as originally introduced, was trying to break faith with the ratepayers, but the Chrisfcchurch members objected to that. Tho Board had treated the members most unfairly.
Tho Bill waa withdrawn.
