The Hon. G. J. Smith and the Hon. j E. C. J. Stevens arrived on Saturday from Wellington by the Wahino. Mr and Mrs P. Elworthy, of Timaru, were passengers from Wellington by Saturday's ferry steamer. Mr Mark Cohen arrived from Wellington on Saturday and went on to Dunedin. Hood has been appointed to represent the Norwegian Veritas in Auckland. This is equivalent to the British Lloyd's. Mr J. E. F, 'Buckland. chief engineer of the Kamona, has been appointed Government Inspector of Machinery for the Southland district. The Dunedin "Star" states that it is the intention of tho Postinaster-Goneral (the Hou. R. Heatou Rhodes) 'to attend the International Postal Conference at Madrid next summer. The Rev. J. Hall, who has for some years been.pastor of the Unitarian Church, Auckland, loft by the Maheno last week, en route for Johannesburg, where he has been appointed to the charge of a church. The Maror (Mr H. Holland) and the Town Clerk. (Mr H. R. Smith) returned on Saturday from Auckland, where they attended the opening of tho Exhibition. At His Majesty's Theatre, Ashbirrton, on Friday evening, the Ashburton Temperance Band presented Mr George Martinengo, who is leaving Ash Durton for Chrisfcchurch, with a handsome clock as a token of esteem. Cyril Harvey* M.A., of Christ's College, Cambridge, and Well's Theological College, who recently came out from Home and has been acting as curate in the Wanganui parish, has been appointed vicar of Waipawa. Sergeant-Major XVoston, of Nelson, who has been training three senior cadet teams for the Auckland Exhibition/ has been transferred to Christchurch with the rank of regimental sergeant-major of the Ist, (Canterbury) Regiment. At His Majesty's Theatre on Friday night tho members of the staff presented the. manager,, Mrs Millingtcn, who left on Saturday to' manage the Ashburton branch of Hay ward's Picture Enterprises, with a clock and a set of silver toilet waTC, and general regret was expressed at her departure. Among the wool buyers who have axrived in Christchurch to attend the first local sale are:—Messrs "W. Triffith, H. Hull, F. B. Clark, W. Oxley. J. A. Parker, J. R. Smith (Bradford), Mr D. Byron (London), Mr F. Myers (Pudsey), Messrs F. R. Pratt and F. H. Montgomery (Philadelphia), Mr F. L. Van Enpe (Los Angeles), Messrs G. Graiohen, O. and A. Dietrich (Leipzig), and Messrs M. Toulemonde and G. Moularet. Dr. Averill, Bishop-Elect of Auckland, arrived at Auckland from Napier by the Main Trunk express on Saturday on a three days , visit. On Saturday afternoon his Lordship consecrated a chapel which has been erected at the Children's Home in memory of the late Sister Cecil. Yesterday morning he held an ordination sertice, when the following seven candidates for the office of deacon were presented:—'Messrs F. A. Crawshaw, C. E. Kelham, J. Pigott, lE. D. Briscoe, H. A. Johnson, E. L. Harvie, and Hoiri Raiti (George j Wright). Bishop Averill leaves for tho south by this evening's express. A Masonic function of exceptional interest took place at Auckland on Saturday afternoon (says a Press Association message), when W. Bro. Alfred Seymour Bar.kart was installed as R.W.T>.G.M. of the English Constitution of Freemasons for the Auckland District. A gathering of several hundred Masonic brethren included distinguished visitor* from all parts of tho Dominion, and the proceedings were most impressive, the ceremony being conducted by Wor. Bro. J< R- Reed, who has filled the office of District Grand Master during, the past seven years. On Saturday evening a dinner was tendered to the visiting and Auckland brethren by the newly-elected District Grand Master.
