AT THE POINT OF DEATH
NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWSING. PLUCKY RESCUES AT KAIAPOI. During the progress of the games on the Kaiapoi bowling green on Saturday, which is situated near a bend and deep part of the river, an alarm was given that a lad of twelve named McGarry, had, while fishing, slipped from the Cure Boating Club's stage into the water. Colonel D. Cossgrove was the first to arrive, and as the lad was sinking some distance out from the bank s?flP , nged in to the rescue, which was a difficult matter, owing to the strong current. Mr 1?. Richardson 4 who is a good swimmer, made an effort to bring the boy and the colonel to the bank, where by this time there were several ready to assist in landing them. It was apparent,, however, that Mr Richardson's task was a hard one, and* Mr R, Wylie (Mayor) went to his assistance. McGarry was got to the bank in an exhausted state, and it then became a matter of some anxiety to get Colonel Cossgrove from the water and up the steep slippery bank. His sudden immersion and his efforts to hold the boy up had given him a chill, but by the efforts of those on the bank, assisted by Messrs Richardson and his Worship, the Mayor in the river, the Commander c t B °y. Scouts w . as rescued in a state of exhaustion. Medical aid was promptly secured, and later in the evening all the parties had practically recovered.
