Benjamin Hoare has been awarded £750 damages against John Norton, proprietor of the newspaper "Truth, ,, for a libel published in defendant's paper. .'..'■
Mr Benjamin Hoare is a welUknown personality in Australian journalism and politics, and. especially known as a writer on economics, and a? leading apostle of protection, which he helped largely to make first the policy of Victoria and ultimately of Australia. , Hβ has.been on tho editorial staff of the Melbourne "Age" since 1890. Hβ was born in Buckinghamshire, England, in 1842, and after coming to Australia, founded the "Geelong Times'' and "Evening Star," and was for four yeans on the editorial staff of the "Daily Telegraph," Melbourne. .Be ie the author of "Figures of Fancy" (1869), "Truth Triumphant" (1879), "Twentyfive Years of Protection" (1896), "Preferential Trade" (1904), and a number of publications issued by the Catholio Truth Society dealing with economic and historical questions, and the relations of the Catholic Churchto Labour.
