TO-DAY'S BIG FUNCTION.

All the indications point to the Rose Carnival, to be held in the Christchurcli Botanical Gardens to-day, being a highly successful gathering. The weather, that primo consideration in outdoor fetes, promises to bo excellent, and tho gardens and the greenhouses are at the present looking beautiful. The Carnival has # been promoted for the purpose of raising funds to assist the Domain Board to further beautify the people's own l gardens, and those who attend to-day's function will be attaining two objects—assisting to make more beautiful the Public Gardens, and obtaining an excellent afternoon and evening's entertainment.

At noon to-day the Carnival will begin. At that hour the gates will be thrown open, and they will remain open till 6 p.m., with tho exception of the gates facing Hereford street, which will remain open till 10.30. The principal attraction of the Carnival will bo the rose and sweet pea show. For the different sections very numerous entries have been received. Excellent entries have been received also for the decorated vehicles, of which there will be a parade at 2.30 p.m. for judging purposes. Numerous tents will be pro-, vided, whore refreshments, such as strawberries. and cream and afternoon tea, will bo obtainable. For the children there will be numerous side shows, including Punch and Judy, a monster bran tub, and an Aunt Sally. Band music will bo provided by the Woolston Band (specially engaged for the function) by tie C.V.C., and the Burnham Boys' Bands, which have given their services gratis. In tho evening tho Gardene will be brilliantly illuminated. The tickets for the Carnival, which also give the holders a chance to. win a return ticket from Christchurch to Australia, a return ticket to the Auckland Exhibition, or a return ticket from Christchurch to Hanmer, have been selling well, and a very big crowd 13 almost suro to be present at the Carnival to-day.
