THE TEMPER OF CONTROVERSY.
If the Church of our day is to escape ! from the temper of controversy and from tlw spiritual prido "which it too often intensifies, said Canon Alexandor at St. Paul'e recently, it must bo by co'icontration on tho life and character and passion of its Lord. The first question for partisan to ask himself touching ono from whom ho differs is whether he is a roan of real piety I and earncstaess and of true devotion to j the some Master. If ho is, here, amid whatevor difference of view, is a deep spiritual basis on which the two may meet as friends. It is in tho proachinß of Christ's own person, of Christ's living and dying, hoping and suffering for moj, that tho vital strength of Christian theology will always bo found. It is on the common ground of a living attachment to His person that Christian reunion will, if over, be realised.
