MANY FAMILIES IN WANT. TROUBLE WITH A FIRE BRIGADE. (special to "the pbess.") DTJNEDIN, December 5. Many families are now beginning to be in want. The position seems to be that numbers of persons who have struggled'to hide their poverty are at last compelled to ask for come assistance from agents of philanthropic 60----cieties, church deaconesses, and others who go about doing good. Many of the persons now in reduced circumstances have been accustomed to deal with small shops that cannot afford to give credit, and the shopkeepers in a large way do not always know the new customers well enough to trust them. In this way the times are hard for numbers of persons not only strikers, but those who axe indirectly affected. At Port Chalmers it is rumoured that the members of the Fire Brigade have sent in notices of resignation, practically in a body, because an officer did work recently on a ship in dock usually done by the men who are now on strike. The firemen, however, will carry out their duties as usual until a fresh brigade is enrolled, or tho difficulty is otherwise fixed up.
Unloading operations proceeded on the Kaiapoi, Dorset, Waitomo, Turakina, and Miiniro and the carters were kept busy, it is expected that the discharge of the Kaiapoi will be completed to-morrow, and that she will leave for Wellington on Monday. The loading of the Waitomo was finished and sho sailed at 7 a.m. for Auckland with about 2400 tons of general cargo. The Mimiro is expected to sail for Brisbane to-morrow morning, but the Dorset and Turakina will not leave until next week.
