LYjRi'ELTON REGATTA ABANDONED. OWING TO STRIKE TROUBLES. A meeting of the Lytte'ton regatta committee was held last night, Mr W. C. Cleary presiding over a largo attendance. Tho chairman explained that tho meeting had been called to determine whether or not it would be advisable to hold the regatta on New Year's Day, seeing that tbo port was in such an unsettled state, consequent upon tho ftrike of the , waterside workers. He stated that since the annual meeting tho executive bad met on several occasions, and had circularised subscribers asking them whether' in the event of the regatta being held, they would bo prepared to givo financial assistance as in the p-ast. The rep'ies received intimated that several members,,owing to present circumstances, would be unable to make a contribution, and as the executive did not consider it advisable to curtail tho proposed programme it was decided that the committee be called tosj-ether to discuss the petition. Another dJEculty that tho executive w-.ro calied upon to face was the fact that if on New Year's Day the wharves wero still, under the control of the polico authorities it wou!d mean that the public would be? exe'uded, thus preventing aooeos to the water-trout.

A msmber sugrested that, in view ot tbe circumstances mentioned by the chairman, the «xeeuttve, rather than abandon the fixture, -wiich wm an annual one, should consider the adri-ibleneae of holding it at Corsair Bay. This was opposed on the ground that the holding of tbe fixture at the Bay would mean a considerable curtailment of the programme, and -would tend to make the regatta a second-rate, one. After further discursion the following motion w*s carried: "That the regatta be not held on January Ist, bnt if a euitable date present itself early next year the executive be empowered to call a meeting of the general committee, to consider if any further steps should be taken."

Tho secretary was instructed -to write a letter of condolence to the -widow of tho late Mr G. Laurenson, who had been an ardent supporter of the regatta.
