CHRISTCHURCH CASEJ
Cases arising out of the strike accupied tho attention of Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.,' at the Police Court on Saturday morning. Charles Henry William Lepper was charged with using insulting behaviour in Colombo street on Saturday morning, with intent to provoke a, breach of the peace. Accused, a young man. pleaded not guilty. Constable Hendry stated that at 9.35 on Saturday, at the Bank of New. Zealand crossing, accused called out "Bah, Bah!" to special constables proceeding down Hereford street. Accused: Excuse mc, sir; I say it is a mistake. Constable Teape corroborated Constable Hendry's statement; Accused: Excuse mc, I was not there, sir. .- Accused, said he was proceeding from the General Post Office with a friend, who was reading, a letter, to him. Certain of the contents of the letter caused him to exclaim, "Ha. ha, ha I" Accused denied that he had "thrown off" at the special Constables; _he was only too' willing to be a special constable himself, he said. J list Decause he had said "Ha. ha!" he had been arrested.
Accused, was fined 20s, in default 14 days' imprisonment. ' Henry John Davis and Leonard James Rowan, both pleaded not guilty to using insulting language in Christchurch on Friday, to wit, "You scabs!" with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.- , Accused asked for an adjournment, which was granted till Monday, bail being allowed each in £50, and one surety of £50.
