The London "Daily Telegraph" states that Italy has arranged to purchase the battleship llio de Janeiro from Brazil. A meeting of the English Fence Society passed a resolution against compulsory service in any form. A Constantinople message states that Aymi Bey's appointment as Vali of Adana is interpreted as forestalling a demand for his dismissal. B. Burdekin, of Sydney, is" rowing in the Oxford Trial Eight, and A. C. Bell, Geelong, and R. Gould, Christchurch, in the Cambridge trials. Lord Cowdroy's relinquishment of the Colombian oil concession has made a good impression, and has strengthened tho Anglo-American accord. The British War Office is courtmartialling five quartermasters, charged with bribery and corruption in connexion with tho canteens. Wages in the manufactured iron and steel trades in the North of Jbngland have been reduced by sixpence a ton for puddling, and fivo per cent, in forges and mills.
At the inquest at Perth, West Australia), on the farmer, Williams, a verdict of murder was returned against Odgers, who was already in custody in connexion with the murder of a woman. The seismograph has not recorded tho earthquake which the residents of Port Melbourne profess to have experienced. They maintain that there was a tremor. Pinheiro, a diamond broker, was travelling by train to Vienna, when a stranger in the carriage knocked him senseless, and stole £12,500 worth of diamonds. In the case of the Attorney-General of the Commonwealth versus tho Colonial Sugar Company, argument was opened before the Privy Council, and the case then adjourned till Monday. One hundred and five persons were poisoned at Fuentes Vejuna, in Spain, through drinking bad water. Thirteen died and many are in a critical condition. In pursuance of the recommendation of tho Archbishops' Committee, 1911, nearly every diocese in England has formulated a scheme of nnanco in connexion with various voluntary funds for Church purposes.
The "Westminster Gazette" confratulates "the Hon. A. L. Stanley on is accession to so important and dignified an office as that of Governor of Victoria, and states that he will havo opportunities in democratic Victoria of filling out a career which began with such promise.
