WHAT THE CHURCHES ARE DOING.
NEWS AND NOTES FOR PULPIT AND PEW.
PRESIDING BISHOP FOR AMERICA. Tho Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States has never had an archbishop. The senior of the bishops, however, has enjoyed tfce title of "presiding bishop,'' and has discharged various special functions, in addition to that of the chairmanship of the House of Bishops. The recent General Convention has decided that at tho nest vacancy the office of '-presiding bishop shall be elective instead of being filled on the ground of seniority. This reform has been advocated for a long time m the interests oi efficiency. In the nature of tho case, the senior bishop is usually a man of advanced years, too infirm to bo much more than a figurehead. It is hoped'that tho election will place in the presidential chair a man in the prirno of life, with vigour, initiative, and other gifts of leadership. Tho ultimate result of .this new legislation will probably bo the approximation of the duties of the office to thceo of an English archbishop, even though tho American title bo retained.
