EMPLOYERS BEING APPROACHED

From the strike point of view matters were quiet in town yesterday morning; from the point of view of men returning to work they were busy. The drivers employed by eeveral big firms reported themselves.for duty and began work. No instances Trere reported of such drivere having been interfered with. Carlylo street, near tho railway goods shed, ■R-liich on Wednesday was a centre of attraction to large crowds was peaceful, and busy working. The work of carting was going on much as if there never had been such a thing as a strike. The meeting of the Drivers' union at the Socialist Hall yesterday lasted till shortly after one o'clock, when it stood adjourned till 2 p.m. to-day. Tho lengthy adjournment was the result of an important derision arrived at. During the meeting the Strike Committee conferred with the drivers, and after considerable discussion, which was at times rather animated, a motion was agreed to instructing the Secretary of the Union to endeavour to arrange a meeting for to-day between the employers of the drivers and carters and the two Canterbury members of the National Executive of the Transport Workers' Department of the United Federation of Labour —Messrs H. R. Voyce (secretary of the Lyttelton Watersiders' Union), and Hiram Hunter (secretary of the Canterbury Drivers' Union). The object of the meeting is to discuss the question of the basis upon which the present strike of drivers in Christchurch. can be settled. . . , The motion was not earned unanimously, but the majority in favour of it was" large. , . Employers of drivers in and! about Christchurch aro invited T>y the Canterbury Drivers' Union to meet the Union at the Trades Hall. Gloucester street, at 10 this morning, for the purpose of discussing a basis of settlement of the present strike, when Messrs H. R. Voyce and H. Hunter yill state the views of the Transport Workers.
