OBITUARY.
MRS THOMAS HARDCASTLE. Another of tho pioneers of Cantorbury passed away yesterday at Timaru in the person of Mrs Hardcastle, widow of the late Air Thomas Hardcastlo, at the advanced ago of 89 years. The deceased lady was born at Leven, near Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and came to New Zealand with her husband and the elder portion of their family in the 6hip Canterbury, arriving at Lyttelton in July, 1858. After a short time spent at Kaiapoi arid ~ at the Springs station, the late Mrs Hardcastle resided for four years at Longbeach -where her husband was manager, and when the now noted estate was in its wild, natural state. twenty years were spent in Pleasant Valley, *t tho well-known homestead, Castlcwood. Mr Hardcastle then retired to live in Timaru, where he died in 1897. The late Mrs Ilardcastle was a strong-minded, practical woman, well fitted for the life of a pioneer. She was devoted to her homo and family, and was much respected by all who know her. Though confined to her bod during the last few years, the deceased lady's mental faculties remained unimpaired to tho last, and yesterday she passed away peacefully. Of a family of twelve children she leaves three daughters and aix sons, a number of grandchildren and grpat-grandchildren. She will be buried on Saturday in St. Ann's Chu-cTiyard, Pleasant" Valley, beside her husband and two of her daughters.
