MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr H. W- Bishop, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders for drunkenness were fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. John Sullivan, on charges of drunkenness and procuring liquor while prohibited, was fined 10s on each charge, in default 8 days' imprisonment. A DESERTER. Joseph Kelly was charged with deserting from the s.s. Tyrone, at Wellington, on thel7th of February, Accused pleaded guilty, and said he was lying drunk at Taranaki street, when his ship left. As a proof of hia statement that he did not intentionally leave the ship, he remarked'that he had £10 or £11 due to him from the ship, and all his clothes were aboard. The Magistrate: The moral is, don't get drunk. j Accused: Correct, sir! The Magistrate (to Chief-Detective Bishop): What are we going to do with him? His ship is wrecked. It was stated that' the accused had been working at Lyttelton before the strike, and had since been keeping out of mischief, and this good report secured him his conviction and discharge. • REMANDED. "What am I charged with?" asked Laura Chaffeyir When told, she replied, "I'm riot a rogue and a vagabond." Asked ,if she elected to .be dealt with summarily, she exclaimed, "I prefer to be charged before a" jury." Accused was remanded for. a week. THEFT. Joseph Keys said he was stupid with drink, and did not" remember anything of the theft of a pair of boots, valued at 17s 10d, tho property of A. Robertson: Nor was his memory refreshed when a juvenile witness gave a graphic account of the .crime. , Accused was fined 40s, or in default one- month's imprisonment. ~
