SIR ROBERT BALL.
LONDON, November .25. The death is announced of Sir. Robert 8011, the woll-knowix astronomer. - Sir Robert Ball, liL.D., FJi.S., was Lowndeaa Professor, of Astronomy a.nd Geometry; Cambridge, and had been director of Cambridge Observatory jdnce 1892. He was bora at Dublin on July Ist, 1840. Ho was a son of Robert Ball, LL.D., the well-known naturalist. Sir Robert married Frances Elizabeth, daughter of W. E. Steel, M.D., director of tho Science and Art Museum, Dublin, in 1868, and had four sons and two daughters. Hewas educated at Abbot's Grange, Chester, Trinity College, Dublin, and wae Royal Astronomer of Ireland, 1874;92, and had held a. great number of scientific and expert positions. Hβ was an ox-president of the Royal Astronomical Society, ex-president of the Royal Society of Ireland, and expresident of the Mathematical Association. I His publications include a long list of astronomical works known the world over.
