THE SPKCIAL CONSTABLES.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESB." Sir, —Had our ports been blockaded by order of the Chinese Government instead of by the action of the Pooh-Bahs of the Federation, and if our Government had cabled for the British fleet to open our ports, it would not bo more idiotic to say there would have been no fighting or disturbance had the British fleet not been sent for, than it is to blame the Government for calling up the special constables. If the saintly and philanthropic Federationists are permitted without resistance to block our ports every time they cannot have their own' way they would have no motive to fight. The question for New Zealanders to consider is: Can they do without the money they receive for their exports, or can they do without imports? The second question is: Are they going to rule themselves, or be governed by an irresponsible clique by means of the enforced support of a crowd of coerced, intimidated, pressganged, picketed labour conscripts:— Yours, etc., COMMON-SENSE.
