COALING THE DEFENDER.
SUPPLY OBTAINED IN CHRISTCHURCH. The small steamer Defender, which is loading foodstuffs for Westport, and which has been held up for bunker coal for three or four days, was enabled to secure a supply yesterday. The Strike Committee, which was unable to obtain coal from two local companies or from the Railway Department, owing to the imperative need for conserving existing stocks, were, it is understood, negotiating for a supply from the old steamer Mullogh, which has been, laid up for many months, but the difficulty was finally solved by the purchase of a sufficient quantity from a Christchurch coal merchant. The strikers were, therefore, much gratified when three trucks, containing about 15 to 18 tons of coal attached to the passenger train, arrived in Lyttelton at 4.25 p.m. yesterday. The trucks, which were marked "Urgent," were shunted round the pier in quick time, 'and the cpal was loaded into tho Defender's bunkers last evening. The steamer will complete loading her cargo to-day, when she will leave for Westport.
