LORD GLADSTONE'S DESPATCH.
PROTEST AGAINST FALSE STATEMENTS. (Received November 23rd, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, November 22. Lord Gladstone, in a despatch, oxplained that the conversion of mine compounds into gaols is essential owing to numbers of Indians marching in organised bands and courting arrost. He protests against the false, exaggerated, and mischievous statements current in England and India. Tho allegations of shooting and flogging to coerce Indians to work are absolutely false.
The passive resisters at the Newcastle mines have resumed work, and orderly conditions have been restored without serious hardships.
