NOTES.
Nominations for the Uestport Trotting Club's Midsummer Meeting close this evening. After winning tho "Winton Giuneas, the Martian colt Quirinis was "priced" by a would-b.e nurchaser. His owner asked 600 guineas for .vim, .however, and no business resulted, says an exchange. Three prominent sires, in Carbine, Sheen, and Noble Chieftain, wero foaled as far back as 1885, and are therefore twenty-eight years old. This ago is considerably beyond tue average gained, by thoroughbreds but, Matchless died at thirty-two, .uiomed (t>ho first Derby winner) at thirty-one, and Touchstone at thirty. Tho respective winners of tho ltussian, German. Austrian- and Danish Derbies this season were each sired by an English-bred stallion. The Danish Derby was won by Lily, whoso dam Lily Rosebery (Crowberry—juost Link II.), was, purchased when carrying Lily for 30 'guineas, at the .December sales at Newmarket in ISJO9.
A general meeting of the Hnwke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Saturday aiternoon to consider a proposal to dispose of the Society's interests in i/ne Hastings Racecourse to the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. . The excellent acceptances received for the majority of the events to be decided on the first day of the faouth Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, which will be -held on Wednesday, and Thursday next, suggests that the fixture will be a record one in every respect. Tho horses engaged in the principal events represent a good class, and includes soveral successful competitors at the recent Riccarton Meeting. Should the nine horses at present ensaged in tho Summer ~up go to the post a very fine race may be expected, and the event is a very open one. My Lawyer won this race twelve months ago when it was known as the Timaru Handicap. On that occasion he carried Bst 91b, and ran the distance in 2min 6 1-oth sec. His weight this year is Bst 101b, while The Cornet, who finished second with 7st 12JIb (inc. 141b overweight) last year is now handicapped at 7rfc 131b. Gold Coin 7st 71b and Mtrmura . 7st Gib ran unplaced last year, and this time they have been set to carry 6st 131b and Gst 71b respectively.
