WELCOME TO A MISSIONER.
CIVIC RECEPTION TO MB FLANAGAN. • The Rev. J. Flanagan, who- is about to open a mission in Christchurch, was accorded a civic reception by tho Mayor yesterday. There was a good attendance of citizens present. The Mayor said that Mr Flanagan had spent" many years in the slums of London. . The Rev. J. Cocker said that as a result of Mr Flanagan's work the magnificent building known as St. Georgo's Home was erected. On behalf of the Central Mission of Christchurch he extended a most hearty welcome to Mr Flanagan. The Rev. C. H. Laws also referred to the success of Mr Flanagan as a missioner. Mr Flanagan, in reply, thanked the speakers for the warm reception accorded him and for the kindly sentiments expressed towards him. Hβ gave a sketch of his work in the London slums, and pointed out the great difficulties involved. On returning to New Zealand he was delighted to find that his previous mission in the country had not been unsuccessful, for he had lately met. several people who had expressed to him what benefits his former mission had conferred upon them. On the motion of Mr Salter a vote of thanks was accorded the Mayor for presiding.
