MEETINGS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Canterbury Band of Hope Union held its • monthly meeting in the Manchester Chambers,, on Thursday evening. After the opening prayer it was .decided "■ to Eend a letter of eymp3tby to the widow of tho late Mi George Laureneon. Arrangements are in hand for a- vieit to Bangiora on December 11th, and to Limwood on December 3rd. Accounts amounting to £16 were passed for payment. The third of a series of Christmas Ham and Goose "Euchre" tournaments was held at the Papanui Social Club on Thursday night. Mr J. Scott presided over an attendance of thixty-Bix members. Tho winner of the ham was Mr Wm. McCaualand, and Mr E. Nunwick won - the goose. similar tournaments will be played before Christmas. The third quarterly general meeting of tho Papanui Social Club was hold on Thursday night.. About seventy members were present, and Mr James Scott presided. After the usual", business was dispensed with, it was decided to challenge the Christchurch Workinginen's Club to a euchre and crib match. It was also decided to allow members lady friends the nee of the Club Hall for the purpose of a ham and goo&o. euchre tournament. Messrs L. Scott, R. Miliar, and A. Elderton were elected members.

A meeting of the Council of the Animals' Protection Society was held yesterday afternoon, Sir Cecil Moon presiding. Tho secretary reported that the sum of £12 6s 6d had been. received eince the last meeting. The matter of holding a. Pet Show on December 16th (Anniversary Day), wae fully considered, and it was decided to accept the offer of Messrs Bickerton to allow the use of the "Zoo" enclosure and Wainoni Park for the Show. Votes of thanks were accorded to Miss Rhodes, Messrs Bedfern and S. Berneteia, and to Hayward'e Picture Enterprises, Ltd., for the assistance rendered to the Society. The Spreydon Burgesses' Association met in the Council Chamber, Barrington street, on Thursday night, when Mr J. Watte presided over a good attendance of members. The "president (Mr C. Inglies) •wrote tendering his resignation, and after a lengthy discussion it -was' decided, to hold tho matter over till the neit general meeting. It was resolved to eend a letter of protest to the Spreydon Borough Council, pointing out the ■way in which tha-t body hud appointed a foreman. Mr Taylor moved: —"That this Association' protests against the appointment of a foreman, considering the state of the finances of the borough, and also the fact that these duties were undertaken by the clerk when he was* appointed." ' The motion was seconded by Mi Allen, and was carried.
