THE FISHING SEASON

RAKAIA AND SEIAVYX PROVIDE GOOD BASKbTS. (By "R.A.8.") Changeable weather has hardly contributed to heavy catches during the- j past week. The Itakaia has been the j "star" performer. Amongst numerous \ baskets of trout, the capture- of a quinuat salmon, on a spinner, is reported. It weighed Bjlb, but was Bot in tho best of condition, and would havo been much better for another month's feed. As far as I am aware, this is the first fish of this species killed iv tho rivor. Several baskets of trout, weighing from 2ilb to olb 3 were also secured, -'-Transparent Soleskin" and "Whitebait Phantom" being the favourite lures. Lfical anglers are of opinion that feed is rather scarce in the Ilakaia at present. Tho Waimakariri it out are now becoming eatiated with their .diet of bullies and silveries, and are turning their attention, to various minnows, ths> '*Enaka" and "Gold iV.von" being, perhaps, the most successful patterns. \,l have.already, .mentioned that this ' watei; is plentifullystocked with trout, many ol them being of largo eizej and it is gratifying to uoto that they are now commencing to tako freely. I "Old Keiiablc" <tho Sehvyn) is living weli up to its reputation, both as regards ouiJy fishing at tho mouth, and lly in the upper reaches. Fine catches have recoutJy been secured at Greendale, and although tho - average weight is not Jiigh, the numbers more than mako up ior this deficiency. "Butchor" and "Silver Black" are sharing honours as being the most (successful lures. Xiowor down the river, from Boyle's to Co&'s fords, good baskets have been secured. A-"Greenwell's Glory" fished in tho evening seems to meet with most success in this stretch of water. There iias been a good deal of speculation amongst anglers as to the why and where!ore of tagging trout. The local Acclimatisation Society has carried out this work for tho purpose of ascertaining the movements of the trout ' from saauon to and also to obtain some idea as to their rate of growth. A number of tagged trout navo been caught this season, and I! think that the following particulars as j to their growth may prove of intorcst. with one exception tho fish wero ionialcs, and thpy wero all liberated in the Lower Selv.yn. X o . G23 weighed 41b viicn tagged on June fcth last, and snowed an increase of Jib when-"cap-tured last month.
