CHEESE EXPORTS.
POSITION* IN SOUTHLAND. (SFBCIAL TO "MX rRXB3."> - IXVERCARGILL, November 21. The rather undefined stato of affairs ill regard to the export of dairy produce by the Southland factories was made the subject of enquiry yesterday, with a view to ascertaining whether there had been any serious .block, and if farmers were receiving payment from tho factories. Jt was learned that tho strike had not caused a very serious block, and that, with the Rimutaka expected at Bluff on Tuesday to load about 10,000 cases of cheese, a number of big consignments were already on the move. The Rimutaka will be followed about a week later by the Opawa, and these two vessels are expected to carry away all cheese available for export in the province to date. Tho question was asked of the manager of a lending iirm of merchants as to what would be the effect of the irregularity of shipments, and his reply was to tho effect that prices at Home might bo subject to fluctuation as the result of the spasmodic feeding of the market, but the probable extent of that fluctuation could not be estimated. With regard to payments to farmers by tbo various factories. it - wae ascertained that some payments for September and October bad been wade, but in others payments eculd not be made. Tho factories each make their own financial arrangements, bnt it wns confidently stated by" a leading merchant that the factories could, if they wished, obtain advances on warrants of cheese in the factories. However, in cases where payment has not been made, and the practice of nayment on receipt of a bill of lading is in vogue, there is likely to be relief in the. very near future.
