INTIMIDATION OF WORKMEN.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGIUM.) WELLINGTON, November 20. At a meeting of the Wellington Empioyors, Fanners, and Citizens' Defence Committee to-day, the position of -workers in the suburbs was considered, and tho following resolution was carried: — ,J That the attention of tho authorities be drawn to the fact that a large amount of intimidation of workmen, and especially drivers and their households, is still going on, and also to tho necessity t for patrolling all tho principal suburban areas throughout the day and night, and that this bo arranged for as soon as possible." SYSTEM OF PATROLS. A well-planned system is now in operation with tho force of special mounted constables, with the result that while possible outbreaks are guarded against, the men are relieved from unnecessary duty. For some days the eystom has been followed of placing more troops in many localities. Each troop can now keep in touch with other troops readily, with tfio result that should a cart be stuck up .*t would not bo hold up for long. Assistance is always near at hand. This system 6T patrols has to-day been extended so that there is indeed little likelihood of any disturbance becoming serious. The difficult and laborious work of escorting drays is not undertaken, though of course if any particular danger was anticipated it could be arranged for to meet the special cases. HOTELS STILL CLOSED. All hotels remain closed to-day and to-morrow, and after that' the Mayor says, the course to be followed regarding licensed! houses will depend upon circumstances. The police are keeping an active lookout to see that hotels observe the "dry" season.
