PROPOSED PUBLIC MEETING. THE MAYOR'S ATTITUDE. The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) was waited upon by a deputation from the

Christchurch Strike Committee yest«r3aj*/ with reference to the public meeting that tho City Council, at itsineoting on Monday night, decided should be called to discuss matters re-' latitvs to tho settlement of tho strike. Mr Holland stated that in Wow of tho motion giveu notice of by Cr. Sorensen to rescind the resolution, and in accordance with the expressed wish of a majority of the Council, he did not intend to call the public mooting till tho Council had dealt with tho notice of motion at its meeting on Monday next.

Mr W. E. Woodhain, one of tho deputation, said that tho C>triko Committee was of opinion that the time was op- _

portune to hold a public mooting to obtain tho vie\is of the citizens on the subject, aad had resolved, seeing that the Mayor had decided not to hold the public meeting ajjreod upon by tho City Council, to call a public meeting for Saturday nit;ht, at which it- was desired that his Worship should_proside. .Replying to the Mayor, Mr 'ttnodhanv said that the meoting would bo held in tho largest hail available, or, failing that, in Victoria square.

After discussing the mat tor at somelength the Mayor asked what tho terms of the motion were that was proposed to be submitted to the meeting.

Tho deputation suggested that the Mayor should draw up tho motion himself.

It- was ultimately agreed th.it tho motion .should b>? on the lines of. the resolution arrival tit by tho City Council on Monday night to the effect that, representations should be made to th<v Government to pass legislation to deal with the proecnt industrial crisis. The deputation, on their nnrt, undertook that tho tornis of tho motion and the. speeches in support of it. would be moderate and tempornte. On this understanding his Worshin stnted that ho would bo prepared to preside at tho meeting.
