AN OLD ROMANCE.

One of the most .successful disappearances on record was that of William Howe (the "Chronicle" says). Howe was a successful tradesman in Jerniyn etreet. One. morning in 1706 he left his wife, telling her that ho had business in the city. He never came back, and all efforts to trace him

failed. After sotno years his death was presumed, and an Ad; of Parliament passed to enable Mrs Howe to administer her husband's estate. Then, one evening in 1723, tho "widow" re- . ceived a letter from an anonymous correspondent, requesting an interview the following day in Birdcage Walk. Mrs Howe kept the appointment— and discovered her husband. Hβ had been living in disguise in the same neighbourhood all the- time, he explained, and keeping a close eye upon tho movements of his wife. Itiis said that the reunited couple lived happily ever afterwards. - *
