EMPTY HOUSE GUTTED
A file occurred last evening in an empty house, 336 Durham street, close to the intersection of Peterborough street. Tho flames were noticed by a young man passing by, who save the alarm, and the Brigade arrived on the scene promptly. The firo started in a porch at the side-entrance, and had obtained a good hold, but the Brigade extinguished it before it had spread far. Part of tho building was gutted, tho damage being estimated at close oil £100. The owner is Mr Murray Hcbbs, and the building is insured, but the amount was nob ascertainable last night. Neighbours stated that the house had been unoccupied for six months. They turned a drunken man off the premises the night before. Children were also in the habit of playing in the porch, and they attribute the fire to some of tho youngsters dropping matches about.
