THE DRIVERS AND THE NORTHERN'S CARGO.
A SUGGESTION NOT T_.KEN
It is reported that the secretary of tho Canterbury Drivers' L'nion approached some drivers on Tuesday and remarked to them: —
"I understand that you have Keen carting somo of the 'Northern's'
cargo."
•One of tho drivers replied:—"Yes, I have dono so; and I'm going on carting it."
Tho secretary: "I don't know whether you understand that it is 'black' cargo, and you are not supposed to cart it." Tho driver: "Well, we're going to cart it in spito of what you say; because wo don't consider it "black' cargo. Besides, who is going to pay the fines if we go outr 1 You havo uo money in the union."
The secretary: "That will bo all right. Well, it's 'scab' cargo."
The driver: "If you call mc a 'scab' I'll hit you!"
The secretary: "I didn't call you a 'scab.' It is 'scab' cargo."Yesterday the secretary went to "C" shed at the railway yards and said »-o the drivers handling the "Northern's" cargo— "You had better not cart that."
The drivers refused point blank to fall in with his suggestion, and refused to listen to him. They were told something about "not playing tho game to the chaps in port." and "not backing them nn in accordance with their resolution."
The drivers contend that the cargo is noU "black," as it has been handled by union labour? the seameu on the ship being unionists, as are also the railwaymen.
