THE FUTURE OF THE DOMAIN.
Mr H. G. Ell's proposal at meeting of the Domain Board, that city and suburbs should be asked to sujb grants to the Board, resulted as TnigkJtJl haw been expected. The Board once ineffectually, applied for help to to« fil local bodies, when the latter, as Mr Bo«W-$&_ said, were in full work, they recognised Wlft_l futility of asking for assistance when U&|pl various councils were going out of office.^J|tß We are rather surprised that so earnest '«£s§« advocate for Greater (Christchurch as Ell proved to ha should propose such a;||sj scheme; one looked to him rather to port the suggestion that Greater CbtiiV-iyl? church should take over tho management of the Domain, liae new City Council will,', ■% in all probability move in the matter the improvement of the gardens and p-rksV'-and the most husiness-like way of doing % 'it would he to .take over the control. • la -j/;' Urging that this step should be taken, yn. \}s do not wish to be understood as depreciat-" V|k ing the value of the present Board's work.\ >fcfj We have not been able to agree tlieir policy, especially with their rigid exclusion of the universal bicycle from'the%gjc gardens, but in many respect- they done expedient work in the face of gnsVw odds. They have been sorely straitened,i»P@ their finances, and it is obvious that something is done within the next two oc ! i|t three years they will he at the *a&inugm their resources, for they are .capital at the ' rate of £300 ,;)*js| year, and have only £1200 Long before that is exhausted hope to see the Domain, which such a magnificent. recreation ground the city and suburbs, controlled by a V-frf&j----•mittee of the City Council, the rig_t|qt; trustees, who might perhaps with advttls3& tage avail themselves of the advice of sos*V J$ of the experience- present members of te_Vjjj| Domain Board. *"'S
