MAYORALTY OF GREATER CHRISTCHURCH.
In receiving the denutation of citizens who to-morrow intend inviting him to become a candidate for the -Mayoralty of Greater Christchurch, Mr H. F. Wigram need be under no apprehension that the deputation will not fully represent ?*e wishes of the combined boroughs. Further than that, we believe tha proposal will meet with such hearty approval that if Mr Wigram consents to be nominated, Greater Christchurch will do him, and itself, the honour of electing him unopposed. , No name but his has been so much as suggested in connection with the position since Greater Christchurch came into being, for it is recognised by all that to his unfailing tact and courtesy is very largely due the triumphant conclusion ofjhe work which was begun by his immediate predecessors. In accepting nomination histyear for the Mayoralty, Mr Wigram referred to several large schemes for the improvement of the city and suburbs, which were then in the early stages of consideration. It is not too much to say N that by cementing the union between Christchurch and the neighbouring boroughs his Worship did much to make these ■chemes possible. In other respects be has during the past twelve months made immense strides in popularity and esteem, he has gained public
confidence to a remarkable degree, i |gp|Hß though, of course, no city can, Sg|SlS_[ annis," compel a man to become its n_J|p§|ly| we warn Mr Wigram, in all that he has no idea of the amount sure this community will bring to bear him'if he shows any disinclination -toml&K cede to its wish that he shall become the Mayor of Greater Ohristcburch. ~. «>»■
