CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING.
The Summer Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was brought to a clcse on Saturday in beautiful weather, and if the meeting did" not meet with the pubic patronage that the excellent .sport deserved, the club, from a racing point of view, achieved a successFrom first to last the sport was interesting, the Belfast Plate probably being the only event that fell below the standard. Although more suitable weather could not have been desired, the attendance was not much better than that of tho first day, and the totalisator receipts showed that those present were not in a speculative mood; as the amount passed through the machine was £5300, making the total for the two days £7982, as against £8517 last year, or a falling off of £535. As on the first day, the programme was discharged without a hitch, and each event was got off with commendable regularity. Proceedings were opened with the Richmond Plate, in which/there were five starters. Gladsome was first favourite, but Quarrymu.li was almost as well backed. The last-named was making his "debut. He is a handsome colt, by Bill of Portland out of Jladowla, and should furnish into a fine horse. De la Rey, who won on the first day in the colours of Mr Stead, had changed hands, and appeared in the colours of Mr C. Macbell, royal blue and scarlet cap. Considering tho form this son of Seaton Delaval had shown on tho flush day it was surprising that he was not better backed. He gratified his new owner by practically leading from start to finish, and won very nicely by a length from the consistent GladBorne, who struggled gamely for the lead. Qiiarryman ran a bit green, and did l not find his legs until he was well into the straight, but he finished a length and a quarter behind Gladsome, and two lengths in front of Roscommon. There were only three starters for the Belfast Plate for gentlemen riders, and what little betting was done indicated that Ropu, ridden by W. Wood, was the popular favourite. The winner had the field in trouble at the turn, and won by five lengths, the other pair tiring away to nothing. Nell Gwyn would probably havo given more trouble had she not ewerved badly across tho course at the start, but even had she gone Ktraight the result would have been tha same, as she was very tired' at the finish, while the winner had something left in him. The Belfast Plate served asan introduction to the event of the meeting, the Middle Park Plate. Oht of the six on the card, Or_off, Quarryman, and Gladsome were scratched, and the contest was left to Aje.hal.es, To-morrow, and IMach-ino Gun. The latter was making hia first appearance, and although he looked bright and healthy, he appeared to be a trifle on the big side. Achilles presented a well-trained appearance, and despite the fact that the three-year-old •waa giving away a lot of weight to his juvenile opponents, his party were perfectly confident, and so were the speculative portion of the public, as they dad not hesitate to lay the odds on. Machine Gun exhibited a dislike to the barrier, and required) some coaxing to go up, and when the tapes lifted he dwelt for an instant, giving tho other two on advantage. Achilles as a wonderfully quick beginneg, and he was soon in front, bub To-morrow was with him at the end of a furlong, and then ran past him, followed by Machine Gun. To-morrow and Machine Gun together were first into the straight, and it looked as if tho two-year-olds would have a show, but directly Jenkins moved on Achilles the latter ran up to his juvenile opponents. To-morrow was the first done with, and Machine Gun etruggled on gamely, but it was no use, as Achilles won comfortably in the end by a length and a half from Machine Gun; the filly was six lenetha away, but McClusky, when he found" she was beaten, did not ride her right out. The time, lmin 14 4-sth see, has only once been beaten in the race, namely, by Menschikoff, in 1901, when he put up a record of lmin 14sec. Achilles returned to scale not in the slightest distressed, but Machine Gun, who, for an initial effort lad run a good colt, puffed a lot, and waa a bit thick in the wind. To-morrow run well for nearly five fnrlongs, and will probably be in better condition about the Autumn, when her stable mates, Treadmill and Quarryman. should also be in trim. The totaiiuator receipts had up to the fourth race been limited, but speculation (improved with the St. Albaps Handicap. The pen was tun through the names of Lady Lillian and Windwhistle. Pallas at once became the popular fancy. Cannie Chiol was also well backed. The race proved' to be a chase after the favourite, an after Terrapin had led for a furlong, Pallas ran to the front, and he never gave anything a look in afterwards, finally winKing by two lengths. There was a good battle for second place, Cunnie Chiel gaining the verdict by half a length. General fiymons waa three lengths further away fourth, which was not up to his Midsummer Cup form, but, of course, it should be remembered that he was carrying a lot more weight. Welter races are popular, and the Linwood Welter Handicap, which brought out the nice field of twelve, was one of the best betting races of the day. Ardnarft and Puawai, whose mission to Riocarton this time has been a failure, were scratched, and Wellbeck, notwithstanding his load of lOst sib, was made a pronounced favourite. Somerled is a bad horse at the barrier, but aft.r hanging back for a minute or two he was coaxed -up, and got a little bit the best of the start. He made the pace merry round the bend. Regulation, Rosiphele, Zealous and Wellbeck following in the order named. When the straight ■was entered it looked a real good thing for {.oraerled, but Wellbeck was closing on liiin, and after passing Rosiphele and Regulation, he reached Somerled at the distance, and had him in difficulties. The tup weight finished up his task like the racehorse he undoubtedly is, and won by three lengths at the finish, Zealous getting into third place in front of Natalie and •Speculate. The race was cut out at a gijod pace for welter weights, and it is quite evident that every gallop that Weilbeck is getting is bringing him on. Regulation ran very well for a time, but tired, nnd so did Rosiphele. Neither Clanburn nor Narcissus, who ran so well on the first day, were ever conspicuous. Dundas, notwithstanding his breakdown at Wellington, had been fixed up well enough to "enable him to makeliacks of his field in the Selling Race, from which Cannonite and De La Rey were withdrawn. King Stork was travelling faster than Dundas at the finish, but he was still three lengths away when th« winning post was jiaesed; Goldenmere, the favourite, was third, and did not show even good selling i plate form. Dundas was put up for sale, Ik * but $Q bid wm forthcoming.
There was not a single scratching in the Flying Handicap, the dozen on the card going to the post, and it proved one of the best betting races of the meeting. I'saritsa was favourite, though Lady Lillian was almost as well backed. Lady Zetland's bonny daughter did not look hercelf at all. Tsaritsa led from ftart to finish, and won very easily by two lengths from Windwhistle, who was a length m fiont of Muscovite. Lady Lillian could get no nearer than seventh, which is certainly not htr form. The meeting was brought tn a. ciose with the Pest Handicap, from which Wellbeck, Puawai. Rosiphele, Speculate, and Barbette retired, leaving eizht in. After his nm in the St. Albans Handicap, it was not Biirprising to find that Terrapin was made a strong favourite. He was in charge a furlong from the start, and there he remained, although Lolah came at him very gamely inside the distance, but she failed on the post by a neck. Lavalette, who was second favourite,- did not seem to get a good run, but he came with a iate run. and got third place, a length and a hali behind Lolah. The following are the details of the racing: — RICHMOND PLATE HANDICAP, cf mo &ova; second 10 soys from s*ake. ror two-vear-oids. Five furlongs. 73. C. Mac-hel.'i» br cDe la Rey. by Seaton

Before reaching tho home turn To-morrow had taken charge, and Machine Gun also passed the favourite. Once into the straight Ma-chino Gun had got to To-morrow, and at the outer stand Achilles was on terms with the other pair. To-morrow was the first beaten, and. though Machine Gun struggled on gamely he could not hold his own with Achilles, who -won comfortably by a length and a half.
