THE TRAMWAYS BOARD ENGINEER.
APPOINTMENT OF MR F. H. CHAMBERLAIN, j Immediately after the meeting of the \ Tramways Board on Friday, at which the members decided, in committee, on the I appointment of Mr F. H. Chamberlain, of Sydney, as the Board's engineer, the Chairman (.Mr W. Recce) pent a cable message to Mr Chamberlain, and on Saturday received a reply from that gentleman ac- j cepting the position for a term of one year. Mr Chamberlain is an American, and has had about fourteen years' experience of electrical traction installations. The Railway Commissioners of New South Wales selected Mr Chamberlain, who was at the time in New York, en account of his knowledge of and practical experience with polyphase machinery and his general electrical training, to instal in Sydney the new machinery for the extensive electric tramway system of over one hundred miles, under the control of the Commissioner*. Mr Chamberlain has just completed his engagement to the complete satisfaction of the Railway Commissioners, as is evidenced by tho very favourable recommendation given him by the Chief Commissioner (Mr Olliver). He had taken his passage lor England, and had intended leaving towards the end of the present month, when the requirements of the Christehurch District Tramwaj-B Board were brought under hi 3 notice, with the result that the negotiations have resulted in his appointment as tho Board's engineer. In addition to his recent experience in connection xvith the installation of the Sydney electrical tramways, Mr Chamberlain has had fourteen years' experience in every variety of electrical works, the following amongst others: —Two years with the Daft Electrical Lighting Company, Now Jersey (general experience in practical electrical work); two years with the Julien Electric Traction Company, New York (Fourth Avenue tramway line); General Superintendent of the U.S. Electric Lighting Company, Washington; chief electrical engineer of the Metropolitan Railroad Company, Washington (had full charge for three years of their th/ee powerhouses and electrical equipment); and Albany and Hudson Railway and Power Company (in charge of plant for high speed road, which runs from Hudson to Albany, a distance of 47 miles, at a speed of about forty miles per hour). Mr Chamberlain intends leaving Sydney by the Westralia.. on the 25th inst., and should arrive in this city about March 7th.
